Colossal Blunders of the War William Seaver Woods 9781258520977 Books

If you're like me and enjoy reading books lambasting the military leadership that dithered over the unspeakable morass of World War One, then this is a book you will enjoy. Be warned, though, Woods is no Alan Clark (author of The Donkeys) and his prose is, at best, serviceable journalism (with the usual cliches and shallow analysis). The book is divided into four parts. Part One concerns the mistakes of the Americans (not many since the United States was last to the Great War banquet and, in any event, its mistakes derived mainly from undertrained army personnel). Part Two concerns the German mistakes (mostly hubris and Falkenhayn's disasterous new offensive objective of attrition at Verdun in order to "bleed the French white"). Part Three concerns the British and French mistakes (too numerous to mention here). Finally, Part Four is an interesting thumbnail sketch of Russia's slide into Bolshevism with a focus on the intrigues of Rasputin and his disreputable circle. There's nothing new here but the book, at least for me, has the tone I'm looking for; that is, given that the book was written in 1930, the author's barely controlled outrage leaves its indelible mark on every page.
